Mr. Melvin Miles, Jr. has served on the Morgan State University faculty since 1973. As the Director of University Bands, he is the conductor of the Morgan State University Symphonic Winds, MSU Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Combo, and the "Magnificent Marching Machine" Marching Band. As an instructor in the Fine Arts Department, Mr. Miles teaches Instrumental Music Methods and coordinates the wind, percussion and string faculty.



A native of Baltimore, Maryland, Melvin attended Frederick Douglass High School and received his Bachelor of Science and Master of Arts degrees in Music Education from Morgan State University. He attended The Catholic University of America for doctoral studies in Music Education. Mr. Miles maintains an energetic performance schedule guest conducting and adjudicating Symphonic and Jazz Honor Bands throughout the nation. He is frequently invited to present workshops and seminars to discuss diverse musical genres and topics related to music education.



Still an active arranger, Mr. Miles has written numerous arrangements performed by the Morgan State University Marching and Pep Bands that can be heard throughout the nation during the football and basketball seasons. He is known for composing and arranging musical scores as the Musical Director for the Encore Dinner Theater. In addition, he arranged and performed several selections while appearing in Barry Levinson's movies "Diner" and "Avalon".



Melvin Miles is a member of Tau Beta Sigma National Honorary Band Sorority and Kappa Kappa Psi National Honorary Band Fraternity for whom he previously served as National President and Chairman Board of Trustees. In March 2003, he received the “Distinguished Service to Music Medal”, Kappa Kappa Psi’s highest honor.



Furthermore, he holds active membership in the Council of Higher Education in Music (Past President), Music Educators National Conference, Maryland Music Educators Association, College Band Directors Association (State Chairman), Maryland Band Directors Association, HBCU-National Band Directors Consortium, International Association of Jazz Educators, Promethean Kappa Tau, Alpha Psi Omega National Honorary Society and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity.
